Above the last residential level (8th) there is another floor for communal use, covered and very closed to the exterior, which acts as the building’s crowning feature. The stairwells have two 2-bedroom flats on each landing, so that when a third bedroom is required, it is taken from the neighbouring accommodation, resulting in a 3-bedroom flat and a 1-bedroom flat. The standard layout is one of the clearest separations between day and night areas in the entire Hansa district. The kitchen and living/dining room are oriented to the west and open onto a continuous terrace along the entire façade, the toilets are in the centre and the bedrooms to the east. On the fifth floor there are six flats distributed towards the north façade, with a large communal space to the south. Niemeyer designed excellent residential types for the Berlin district. To the south of the latter building and on the other side of Altonaer Strasse is the building of Jaenecke and Samuelson (20), consisting of 68 flats distributed over 9 floors above a commercial building. The block faces south and north and has a gallery on this façade which is accessed by four staircases in two flights perpendicular to the façade, of which the two central ones end on the first floor. All accommodation on levels 2 to 7 are the same and have 2 bedrooms. On the south façade there are 3 rooms, on one side a bedroom, on the other a 21.1 m2 living room and in the centre a multi-purpose space that can be a dining room, a study or a children’s play area. On the 8th floor, in this area, there is a staircase leading up to a 19.8 m2 studio-bedroom. All these rooms have an elongated terrace protected by prefabricated concrete elements. Aalto’s building (22) is surely one of the best typological contributions to the neighbourhood. The architect approached the Berlin commission at a mature stage of his architectural production and extensive residential programme experience. The Nordic master designed a slightly open Figura 7.
