This thesis invites us to explore the fundamental role of drawing, both in the professional and academic world. The importance of this cannot go unnoticed in the face of the challenges of today’s horizon. This interesting and well-founded study examines how the historical debate has shaped the various arguments underpinning the discussion today, from imitating reality to creating something new. The journey begins with Plato and progresses through Aristotle’s Politics (book VIII), passing through an Alberti influenced by Vitruvius, the theories of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Romantic contribution, until it ends in the texts of Adolf Loos and the position of the Modern Movement, without stopping to consider the reform proposed by Professor Teodoro Anasagasti. This theoretical journey also significantly impacted the teaching of architecture during the 1970s, when I began my studies. I clearly remember my first class at the School of Architecture. It was half past eight in the morning when Professor Luis Villanueva entered the classroom. He took a piece of chalk, drew a long line on the blackboard and added two small lines on the lower part of its ends. It was an introduction to the dihedral system and geometric rigour. In time, that teacher became a great friend and taught me something crucial: a geometric error cannot be remedied in architecture. Some years ago, I attended a competition for a tenured post in which the tutor of this paper was a candidate. During one of the tests, he explained precisely how the roofs of Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House were geometrically designed, accompanying his words with beautiful drawings traced with white chalk on the blackboard. That presentation underlined the importance of drawing as a tool for creating and explaining complex ideas.
